Stain and Seal University Recap: Real Conversations About Growing a Contractor Business

Events like Stain and Seal University are always a reminder of how strong and passionate the contractor community really is. Over the course of the event our team had the chance to meet dozens of business owners, hear their stories, and talk about the challenges and opportunities they are navigating right now.

What stood out the most was not just the training or the demonstrations. It was the conversations happening between contractors who are all working to build something bigger than the jobs they complete each week. Events like this create space for business owners to share their experiences, learn from each other, and walk away with new ideas that help them operate better when they get back home.

From new companies just starting their first season to established contractors looking to scale their operations, there was one common theme that kept surfacing in conversation.

Contractors Are Spending Too Much Time Chasing Estimates

Throughout the event we heard the same story repeated again and again. Contractors are receiving more estimate requests than ever before, but not all of those requests are real opportunities.

Many business owners talked about how their days are filled with responding to email inquiries, answering messages from social media, and driving across town to look at jobs that never turn into paying work. By the time they measure the project, write up the estimate, and follow up with the homeowner, they have already invested a significant amount of time.

In many cases those leads were never serious in the first place.

Some homeowners are simply price shopping. Others are gathering numbers months in advance. Some requests never respond after receiving the estimate. Meanwhile the contractor has already spent valuable hours chasing what looked like an opportunity on the surface.

For growing companies this becomes a serious challenge because time is one of the most valuable resources they have.

The Work Is Not the Problem

One thing was very clear in every conversation we had during the event. Contractors are not afraid of the work.

Most of the business owners we spoke with genuinely enjoy the work they do. They take pride in transforming a fence, restoring a deck, or bringing a property back to life with a fresh stain or seal. The job site is where many of them feel most comfortable.

The challenge is everything that surrounds the work.

Running a service business requires juggling dozens of responsibilities every day. Contractors are answering calls, managing crews, ordering materials, scheduling jobs, handling marketing, and keeping customers informed. When estimating becomes another time consuming process layered on top of those responsibilities, it quickly creates pressure on the entire business.

This is where many companies begin looking for better systems.

Why Systems Matter as Contractors Grow

One of the most encouraging parts of the event was hearing how many contractors are actively thinking about improving the systems behind their businesses.

Instead of chasing every request that comes in, business owners are looking for ways to respond faster, qualify leads earlier, and focus their energy on real opportunities. When those systems are in place, the entire operation begins to run more smoothly.

Crews stay busy on jobs that are actually scheduled. Owners spend less time driving around measuring projects that never move forward. The business becomes more predictable and easier to manage as it grows.

For many contractors this shift represents a major turning point. Instead of constantly reacting to new requests, they begin building processes that allow them to work smarter and close more of the right jobs.

Events Like This Move the Industry Forward

Stain and Seal University continues to be one of those events that brings contractors together in a meaningful way. The hands on training is valuable, but the conversations happening between business owners are just as important.

When contractors share what they are learning in their businesses, everyone benefits. Ideas get exchanged. Challenges get discussed. New approaches begin to take shape that help companies operate better across the entire industry.

That kind of collaboration is what pushes the industry forward.
